  7.     The lean and mean of haute couture were poised to think --
  8. and say -- the worst about Gianfranco Ferre. After all, the
  9. Italian had replaced the redoubtable Marc Bohan at the House of
  10. Dior when the latter got the boot in May. Last week, as Ferre
  11. showed his first collection, fashion's arbiters met to pass
  12. judgment on his bows and furbelows. Sweltering inside a Parisian
  13. garden tent, U.S. buyers were warm in their admiration for his
  14. ball gowns. Though he picked up the Golden Thimble for his
  15. sumptuous duds, most locals gave the interloper's designs a cool
  16. shoulder. Their verdict: not French enough. Quelle surprise!
