- The lean and mean of haute couture were poised to think --
- and say -- the worst about Gianfranco Ferre. After all, the
- Italian had replaced the redoubtable Marc Bohan at the House of
- Dior when the latter got the boot in May. Last week, as Ferre
- showed his first collection, fashion's arbiters met to pass
- judgment on his bows and furbelows. Sweltering inside a Parisian
- garden tent, U.S. buyers were warm in their admiration for his
- ball gowns. Though he picked up the Golden Thimble for his
- sumptuous duds, most locals gave the interloper's designs a cool
- shoulder. Their verdict: not French enough. Quelle surprise!
